Standard film dressings use a firm adhesive that provides a secure bond on robust skin but can cause discomfort or trauma on sensitive, fragile, or skin at risk surfaces. A gentle adhesive formulation achieves the same waterproof transparent film protection with a lower tack adhesive that is kinder to the skin beneath, particularly for patients who require film dressings over extended periods or who have skin that reacts to stronger adhesives. Opsite Flexifix Gentle is a regulated medical device from Smith & Nephew. It is part of the Opsite Flexifix range, which provides transparent polyurethane film in a continuous roll format that can be cut to any required length before application. The "Gentle" variant uses a lower tack adhesive formulation specifically developed for use on sensitive, fragile, or skin at risk where standard film adhesives may cause discomfort or trauma at application or removal.

The film itself is the same transparent polyurethane material used across the Opsite film range. It is waterproof, moisture vapour permeable, and transparent, providing the same visual monitoring access, waterproof protection, and breathability as the pre-cut Opsite Film Dressing. The distinguishing feature of Opsite Flexifix Gentle is not the film but the adhesive: the gentle adhesive exerts less tack force against the skin surface, reducing the risk of skin damage at removal, particularly on elderly skin, radiation damaged skin, skin affected by long-term corticosteroid use, and skin that has already experienced adhesive-related trauma.

The roll format provides clinical versatility that pre-cut sizes cannot match. The clinician or patient cuts the required length from the roll before application, allowing the film to be sized precisely for the wound, skin site, or device being covered. Irregular wound shapes, large surface areas, and sites where a standard pre-cut size either does not fit or wastes material are all better served by a roll format. Two widths are available: 2.5cm x 5m and 5cm x 5m.

Opsite Flexifix Gentle has no absorbent capacity and must not be applied directly over exuding wounds as the sole dressing. Apply only to dry or minimally producing wound surfaces. Dry the periwound skin completely before application. Apply without tension. The gentle adhesive, while lower tack than standard film, still requires care at removal on very fragile or thin skin.

Gentle Adhesive Formulation

The adhesive on Opsite Flexifix Gentle is formulated with a lower tack level than the standard Opsite Flexifix adhesive. Tack is the immediate adhesive force that the adhesive exerts on contact with the skin. A lower tack adhesive bonds to the skin surface with sufficient force to keep the film in position during normal activity while requiring less force to detach from the skin at removal. The reduction in removal force is the primary clinical benefit for patients with sensitive or fragile skin, where the mechanical stress of removing a higher tack film can strip or damage the epidermis.

Waterproof Film Layer

The polyurethane film is impermeable to liquid water. When applied with the edges adhering fully to the surrounding skin, external water from showering or bathing cannot reach the covered area through the intact film. This allows patients to wash normally while the dressing or covered site is protected. For the waterproof seal to be effective, all edges must adhere to the skin and the film must remain undamaged.

Moisture Vapour Permeability

The polyurethane film allows moisture vapour from the skin surface beneath to pass through and evaporate from the outer surface. This prevents moisture accumulation under the film during extended wear. For patients on extended film dressings, particularly those on compression hosiery or leg ulcer management programmes where film may be used for secondary fixation, the moisture vapour permeability reduces the risk of maceration of the skin beneath the film over time.

Roll Format and Cut to Size

Opsite Flexifix Gentle is supplied as a continuous roll. The required length is cut from the roll immediately before application using scissors. This allows the film to be precisely sized for the site being covered. For standard fixation strips, short lengths are cut. For covering larger areas, longer lengths are cut. For irregularly shaped areas, the roll can be cut to the appropriate length and the width dimension selected to match the site. The 2.5cm width suits narrow strips for tube fixation and dressing edge fixation. The 5cm width suits broader coverage areas.

Preparation

• Wash hands and use gloves.
• Ensure the skin surface is completely dry.
• Remove any previous film residue or adhesive from the skin before applying fresh film.

Cutting and Application

• Measure and cut the required length from the roll using clean scissors.
• Round the corners of the cut piece if desired to reduce edge lift.
• Remove the release liner.
• Apply the film without tension, smoothing from the centre outward.
• Press all edges firmly to ensure full skin contact.

Removal

• Lift one edge of the film and peel slowly back along the skin surface.
• Do not pull upward at a sharp angle.
• Support the skin ahead of the peeling edge.
• On very fragile skin, soak the film edge with warm water or saline to further reduce adhesive force before peeling.

Apply Opsite Flexifix Gentle without tension. Even a gentle adhesive film applied under stretch can cause skin trauma when it recoils. Rounding the corners of the cut piece before application reduces the number of sharp corner points that can catch on clothing or bedding and begin to lift. Replace the dressing if any edge lifts before the planned change.

Opsite Flexifix Gentle 2.5cm x 5m

A narrow roll providing a 2.5cm wide film strip in a 5m roll. Suited to tube and line fixation, narrow dressing edge fixation, finger and digit applications, and any site where a narrow strip of gentle adhesive film is the appropriate coverage width. The 5m length provides a substantial supply for ongoing use.

Opsite Flexifix Gentle 5cm x 5m

A broader roll providing a 5cm wide film in a 5m roll. Suited to wider dressing fixation, cannula site cover, broader skin surface protection, and applications where the 2.5cm width is insufficient for the site being covered. The 5cm width allows lengths to be applied across larger wound areas or dressing surfaces as a secondary covering. Multiple strips can be applied side by side for broader coverage if needed.

Both rolls use the same gentle adhesive film material. Width selection is based on the application site dimensions.

When Not to Use Opsite Flexifix Gentle

• As the sole dressing over exuding wounds. Opsite Flexifix Gentle has no absorbency.
• Infected wounds.
• Known sensitivity to polyurethane or the adhesive components.

Precautions

• Apply to completely dry skin.
• Apply without tension or stretch.
• Remove slowly along the skin surface.
• On very fragile skin, soak the edge before removal.
• Single use only for each cut length.
• Keep the roll in its original packaging when not in use to protect the adhesive.

Adverse Effects

• Skin stripping if the film is removed sharply from very fragile or thin skin, even with the gentle adhesive formulation.
• Skin maceration if applied over an exuding wound.
• Adhesive skin reaction in sensitive individuals, though the gentle adhesive is formulated to minimise this risk.

Patients and Situations Where Opsite Flexifix Gentle Is Appropriate

• Patients with sensitive, fragile, or skin at risk where standard film adhesives cause discomfort or skin trauma at removal, including elderly patients, patients on extended corticosteroid treatment, and patients with radiation damaged skin
• Secondary fixation of primary wound contact dressings on patients where gentle adhesive contact with the periwound skin is a clinical priority
• Tube and IV line fixation on patients with sensitive skin or in paediatric settings where skin tolerance is a management consideration
• Large area coverage or irregular wound shapes where the roll format allows precise custom sizing not available with pre-cut films
• Any film dressing application where a lower tack adhesive is clinically preferred over standard film adhesive

Opsite Flexifix Gentle vs Standard Opsite Film Dressing

Both products from Smith & Nephew use the same transparent waterproof polyurethane film. The differences are format and adhesive. Opsite Film Dressing is pre-cut in three fixed sizes with a standard adhesive. Opsite Flexifix Gentle is a continuous roll cut to any required length with a gentle lower tack adhesive. Choose Opsite Film Dressing for standard skin where pre-cut convenience suits the application. Choose Opsite Flexifix Gentle where sensitive or fragile skin requires a gentler adhesive, or where the roll format better suits the application dimensions.
