What is Nitrofurantoin?

Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic for the treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs) such as kidney infections and cystitis. The unique nature of this antibiotic allows it to get filtered into your blood and concentrate at the site of infection. However, Nitrofurantoin is not effective for other types of infection.

How Does Nitrofurantoin Work?

Unlike other antibiotics, Nitrofurantoin gets filtered out of the blood and into your urine. This allows the medicine to concentrate in the site of infection among the bacteria which cause UTIs. Nitrofurantoin enters the bacteria’s cells and damages their genetic material to stop their growth.

Due to its nature, Nitrofurantoin does not work for any other type of infection such as viral infections like common colds or flu.

What Are the Benefits of Taking Nitrofurantoin?

Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic that kills the growth of bacteria that cause infections in the urinary tract. It is indicated for the treatment of kidney infections and cystitis.

How Do I Use Nitrofurantoin?

Nitrofurantoin tablets are to be taken orally with food or milk, exactly as prescribed by your doctor. it is recommended to take Nitrofurantoin with some food or snacks to avoid upsetting your stomach. The tablets need to be swallowed whole without chewing or crushing. For maximum benefits, Nitrofurantoin should be taken at even intervals of time, preferably at the same time every day to help develop the habit.

Ensure to take this medication daily until the prescribed amount is finished. Missing doses or stopping intake too early may cause infection to relapse.

Nitrofurantoin Tablets Dosage

Your dosage is dependent on your doctor’s prescription. However, the typical dosage of Nitrofurantoin to treat UTI is 50 mg 4 times a day or 100 mg twice a day. If your infection is more severe, you doctor may increase your dosage to 100 mg 4 times a day.

Take Nitrofurantoin as even intervals throughout the day. If you take two doses, space them out by 12 hours, taking one at 8 am and the other one at 8 pm. If you are prescribed to take it 4 times a day, take it in the morning, midday, late afternoon and before sleep.

Do not stop intake before the course is complete even if you start feeling better. Your infection might come back if you stop dosage too early.
