What Is Misoprostol?

Misoprostol is a prescription medication used for the treatment of stomach ulcers, cause an abortion and to initiate labor. It is most commonly used to treat gastric ulcers in patients who are using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) like aspirin. Misoprostol is specially prescribed to patients who are at risk of developing an ulcer or have a history of ulcers. Misoprostol helps minimise the risks associated with ulcers like excessive bleeding.

It reduces the secretion of stomach acids and protects the lining of the stomach. It is also used with other medications to cause a miscarriage.

How Does Misoprostol Work?

Misoprostol is a synthetic Prostaglandin E1 analogue. Prostaglandin is a group of compounds that have hormone like effects.

How Do I Take Misoprostol?

For The Prevention and Treatment of Ulcers

For the treatment of gastric ulcer, Misoprostol tablets are taken orally. Usually it is taken 4 times a day after every meal and at bedtime. For prevention from ulcers, take this medication as long as you are taking NSAIDs.

For An Abortion

If you are taking this medication to induce a miscarriage, the doctor will prescribe you to take it orally with another medication called Mifepristone.

For Inducing Labor

To induce premature labor and uterine contraction, a trained health professional will insert the medicine in the vagina.

Misoprostol Dosage

The recommended dosage for NSAID induced ulcers is 200 mcg taken 4 times daily. This dose can be reduced to 100 mcg in patients who cannot tolerate the regular dosage.

For abortion, the recommended dose is 600 mg of Mifepristone along with 400 mcg of Misoprostol, taken orally. Dosage for inducing uterine contractions depends on the patient’s condition.

While Using Misoprostol

  • Take this medication regularly if you are using it for treatment of stomach ulcers.
  • Women should not start taking Misoprostol until it is second or third of their menstrual period to make sure that they are not pregnant.
  • If you have forgotten to take your scheduled dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. Then you can skip the missed dose and take the next one on time.
  • Never take two doses at once to compensate for the missed dose.
  • Do not stop taking Misoprostol without your physician’s approval.

Side Effects of Misoprostol

Some common side effects of this medication include diarrhea, headache, stomach pain, upset stomach, gas, vomiting, constipation and indigestion.
