Mebeverine hydrochloride tablets are musculotropic antispasmodics with direct action on the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract, which relieves spasms without affecting the normal motility of the intestine. It works by interfering with the transport of calcium through the membrane of smooth muscle cells.
Mebeverine hydrochloride tablets are musculotropic antispasmodics with direct action on the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract, which relieves spasms without affecting the normal motility of the intestine. It works by interfering with the transport of calcium through the membrane of smooth muscle cells. Since this action is not mediated by the autonomic nervous system, the classic anticholinergic side effects do not occur. The Mebeverine tablet is rapidly and completely absorbed after oral administration. The drug is not excreted as such but is metabolized in the liver giving veratric acid and mebeverine alcohol, which are eliminated in the urine as such or as conjugates. The elimination is total in 24 hours.
Known as an excellent gastrointestinal treatment, Mebeverine is rapidly and completely absorbed after oral administration in the form of tablets. Mebeverine is not excreted as such but is completely metabolized. The first step in metabolism is hydrolysis, originating veratric acid and mebeverine alcohol. Mebeverine alcohol is an active metabolite that undergoes further metabolism, causing mebeverine demethylated carboxylic acid (ACDM) and mebeverine carboxylic acid. Mebeverine tablets belong to a group of medicines called "antispasmodics", which act on the intestine. The intestine is a long tubular muscular organ that serves for the passage and digestion of food. If the intestine spasms or contracts too much, pain is felt. This medication works by resolving spasms and pain.
The main active ingredient (Colofac) addresses the symptoms caused by irritable bowel syndrome. Colofac uses include the excellent treatment of the following symptoms:
- stomach cramps and pain
- bloating and flatulence
- diarrhea, constipation, or a combination of both
- stool made of small hard balls or beads
Always use this medicine according to a doctor's instructions or according to the instructions in the package leaflet. The general guidelines for taking Mebeverine medication are as follows:
- Take the tablet with a little water
- Choose a fixed time to take this medicine. This way, it will be more difficult for you to forget to take a dose
Primary irritable colon syndrome and other pathologies usually included in this group such as chronic irritable colon, spastic constipation, mucous colitis, spastic colitis:

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Stop taking Mebeverine tablets and see a doctor immediately if you experience any of the following serious side effects, as you may need urgent medical treatment. - Difficulty breathing
- Swelling of the face, neck, lips, tongue, or throat

You may experience a milder allergic (hypersensitivity) reaction to the medicine - for example
- A rash
- Redness
- itchy skin
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Confusion
- Nausea
Precautions when taking Mebeverine.
If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to this active ingredient or to any of the other components of the pharmaceutical specialty that have been prescribed for you. If you think you may be allergic, consult your doctor.
Allergy symptoms may include
- Asthma crisis, with shortness of breath, breathing with audible whistles, or rapid breathing.
- More or less sudden swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or other parts of the body. It is especially critical if it affects the vocal cords
- Urticaria, itching, rash
- Anaphylactic shock (loss of consciousness, paleness, sweating, etc).
You should also not take this medicine.
- If you have an episode of paralytic ileus,
- If you are breast-feeding your child,
- If you have cystic fibrosis,
- If you are under 18 years of age

- If you have liver failure,
- If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or think you may be. Do not take this medicine without your doctor's instructions
- If you have kidney failure.
