Mebeverine tablets are a musculotropic antispasmodic that acts directly on the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract, relieving spasms without affecting the normal motility of the intestine. Since this action is not mediated by the autonomic nervous system, the classic anticholinergic side effects do not occur.

What is Mebeverine?

Mebeverine hydrochloride tablets are musculotropic antispasmodics with direct action on the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract, which relieves spasms without affecting the normal motility of the intestine. It works by interfering with the transport of calcium through the membrane of smooth muscle cells. Since this action is not mediated by the autonomic nervous system, the classic anticholinergic side effects do not occur. The Mebeverine tablet is rapidly and completely absorbed after oral administration. The drug is not excreted as such but is metabolized in the liver giving veratric acid and mebeverine alcohol, which are eliminated in the urine as such or as conjugates. The elimination is total in 24 hours.

How does it work?

Known as an excellent gastrointestinal treatment, Mebeverine is rapidly and completely absorbed after oral administration in the form of tablets. Mebeverine is not excreted as such but is completely metabolized. The first step in metabolism is hydrolysis, originating veratric acid and mebeverine alcohol. Mebeverine alcohol is an active metabolite that undergoes further metabolism, causing mebeverine demethylated carboxylic acid (ACDM) and mebeverine carboxylic acid. Finally, all metabolites are excreted in the urine. In plasma
