Lucette Tablets

Lucette is a combined oral contraceptive pill containing a progestogen (drospirenone) and an estrogen (Ethinyl estradiol). This mixture interferes with fertilization because it inhibits the pituitary secretion of gonadotropic hormones by binding to the corresponding nuclear receptors: PR A and PR B receptors in the case of progestogen and ER-alpha receptor for estrogen. This activity leads to the inhibition of follicular maturation and suppresses ovulatory cycles in a high percentage. Furthermore, the mixture causes endometrial changes that interfere with the nesting process and induces the formation of viscous and impenetrable cervical mucus that interferes with the migration of sperm from the vagina to the uterine and tubal cavities. The combined effect of these actions determines their contraceptive efficacy, which reaches up to 99%. The metabolism is hepatic and its elimination is through urine and faeces for both active ingredients and their metabolites. Restoration of ovarian function occurs within three months after stopping treatment.

About Lucette Tablets

Lucette is a combined contraceptive pill which contains synthetic versions of the female sex hormones ethinylestradiol and drospirenone. The hormones in the pill work by preventing your ovaries from releasing an egg. These hormones also increase the amount of mucus in the neck of your womb (cervix) which makes it difficult for sperm to get through and reach an egg. Lucette is used to prevent pregnancy in sexually active women. Because taking the combined contraceptive pill can also result in lighter, less painful and more regular periods, it’s sometimes prescribed for women who experience heavy, painful or irregular periods. Lucette is more than 99% effective (less than 1 woman per year will become pregnant whilst using Lucette) when used correctly.

People also ask

What is Lucette?

Lucette (Ethinyl estradiol/drospirenone) is a contraceptive and is used to prevent pregnancy. This contraceptive is a combination tablet. With the two combined active ingredients being EthinylEstradiol and Drospirenone Each of the 21 pink tablets contains a small amount of two aforementioned female hormones. The 7 white tablets do not contain active ingredients and are called placebo tablets.

How does it work?

The contraceptive pill disrupts the ovulation process by changing the balance of hormones, due to the increased presence of these synthetic versions of estrogen and progesterone. This disrupts the body's fertility cycle, and subsequently, an egg is not released.

The mucous membrane of the cervix is also thickened by these hormones, making it difficult for sperm cells to move through the cervix.

In the event that an egg is released, and the sperm manages to reach the egg, resulting in fertilization, the contraceptive pill offers a final barrier against pregnancy. The lining of the uterus is altered to become extremely thin, making the implantation process difficult (when the egg implants in the uterus).

What are the benefits of taking it?

The Lucette contraceptive is a combined pill. It contains two synthetic female hormones, Ethinyl estradiol, and drospirenone. A Lucette course is taken for 21 days, so you will take it for the first three weeks of your menstrual cycle, followed by seven days off, before the start of the next cycle.

How do I use it and its dosage?

These contraceptive tablets are more than 99% effective when used correctly. No single contraceptive method can fully protect against pregnancy, but the combined contraceptive pill is one of the most reliable methods.

Take a single pill once a day for 21 consecutive days. After this, stop taking Lucette for the next seven days. After a week of not taking Lucette, the 21-day cycle repeats. The pill must be taken at the same time every day. Each pill has a marker indicating the day of the week it should be taken. Take the pill with water. You don't have to take it with food. If you forget to take the pill and it takes less than 12 hours to do so, you are still protected. If you are more than 12 hours late, protection may be reduced and the risk increases according to the larger number of doses you miss.

Side effects & precautions

Like all medicines, this emergency contraceptive can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. If you experience any side effects, especially if they are severe and persistent, or if you have any health change that you think may be due to Ethinyl estradiol/drospirenone, consult your doctor.

All women taking combined hormonal contraceptives are at increased risk of developing blood clots in the veins (venous thromboembolism (VTE)) or blood clots in the arteries (arterial thromboembolism (ASD)).
