What is Humalog?

The use of Humalog is suitable for adults and children.

The Humalog pen is a disposable pre-filled pen containing 3 ml (300 units, 100 units/ml) of insulin. A KwikPen pen contains multiple doses of insulin. The KwikPen pen marks 1 unit at a time. The number of units is displayed in the dosage window, always check it before your injection. You can inject from 1 to 60 units in a single injection. If your dose is greater than 60 units, you will need to take more than one injection.

How does it work?

The main action of insulin is the regulation of glucose metabolism.

Furthermore, insulins have various anabolic and anti-catabolic actions on a variety of different tissues. Within muscle tissue is included increased glycogen, fatty acids, glycerol, protein synthesis, and amino acid uptake, while decreasing glycogenolysis, gluconeogenesis, ketogenesis, lipolysis, protein catabolism, and loss of amino acids.

Insulin has a fast onset of action (approximately 15 minutes), allowing it to be administered closer to meals (from zero to 15 minutes after a meal) when compared to soluble insulin (30 to 45 minutes before). The effects of insulin start quickly and have a shorter duration of action (2 to 5 hours) when compared to soluble insulin.

What are the benefits of taking it?

Humalog KwikPen is used to treat diabetes. It works faster than normal human insulin because the insulin molecule has been changed slightly.

How do I use it and its dosage?

Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. If in doubt, consult your doctor again. To prevent possible disease transmission, each pen should be used only by you, even if the needle is changed.

Dose

Normally, Humalog should be injected within 15 minutes around food. If you need it, you can inject it shortly after a meal. However, your doctor will have told you exactly how much to use when to put it on, and how often. These instructions are specific to you. Follow them exactly and visit your diabetes clinic frequently.

If you change the type of insulin you use (for example, from animal or human insulin to a product with Humalog), you will have to use more or less than before. It may only be this way for the first injection or it may require a gradual change that lasts for several weeks or months.

Humalog KwikPen is only indicated for injection just under the skin. Ask your doctor if you need to inject insulin by another method.

How to prepare Humalog KwikPen

Humalog comes already dissolved in water, so you don't need to mix it. However, you should only use it if it looks like water. It must be transparent, colorless, and contain no solid particles. Make sure this is the case before giving each injection.

How to prepare the KwikPen pen (please read the user manual)

Wash your hands first. Read the instructions on how to use your pre-filled insulin pen. Follow the instructions carefully. Below are some reminders. Use a new needle. (Needles not included).

Purge your KwikPen pen before each use. This ensures that insulin is released and air bubbles are removed from your KwikPen pen. There may still be some small air bubbles left in your pen, these are harmless. But if the air bubble were too large, the injection dose might be less accurate.

How to inject Humalog

Before injecting, clean the skin as you have been taught. Inject under the skin, as you have been taught. Do not inject directly into a vein. After the injection, leave the needle on your skin for five seconds to be sure you have injected the full dose. Do not rub the area where you just injected. Make sure you have injected yourself at least 1 cm from where you last did it and that you “rotate” the injection sites, as explained. Humalog injection will always act faster than soluble human insulin, regardless of where you put it (upper arms, thighs, buttocks, or abdomen).

Humalog should not be administered into a vein (intravenous). Inject Humalog as your diabetes doctor or educator has taught you. Only your doctor can give you Humalog in a vein. Your doctor will only give you Humalog in a vein in special circumstances such as surgery or if you have been sick and your glucose levels are too high.

Side effects & precautions

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

Systemic allergy is rare (≥ 1 / 10,000 to <1 / 1,000). You have the following symptoms:

  • rashes all over the body
  • A drop in blood pressure
  • shortness of breath
  • strong palpitations
  • wheezing
  • sweating

If you think you are suffering from this type of allergy with Humalog, speak to your doctor immediately.

Localized allergy is frequent (≥ 1/100 to <1 /10). In some people, the area where they have injected their insulin becomes red, swollen, or itchy. This situation usually disappears in a few days or weeks. If this happens to you, discuss it with your doctor.

Lipodystrophy (the skin becomes thicker or a kind of hole is formed) is rare (≥ 1/1000 to <1 /100). If you notice that where you give the injections, your skin becomes thicker or a kind of hole, tell your doctor.

There have been cases of edema (for example swelling in the arms, ankles, fluid retention), especially at the beginning of insulin treatment or during a change in treatment to improve control of your blood sugar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Humalog is a rapid-acting insulin that starts to work within 15 minutes after injection. It reaches its peak effectiveness in about 1–2 hours and remains active for 4–5 hours. This rapid onset makes it suitable for managing post-meal blood sugar spikes. Unlike long-acting insulins, Humalog is designed to mimic the body’s natural insulin response, which helps maintain better glucose control after meals.

Travelling with Humalog is straightforward if you plan ahead and follow proper storage guidelines.

  • If it is unopened, it should be stored in the fridge, not the freezer, at 2°C and 8°C.
  • Once opened, Humalog vials or pens can be kept at room temperature (below 30°C) for up to 28 days.
  • During travel, make sure to keep it in a cool bag or insulin travel case to avoid exposure to extreme temperatures.

Yes, this medication can be used alongside other diabetes treatments depending on blood sugar levels and existing medications. It is commonly used with long-acting insulins, oral diabetes medications, and GLP-1 receptor agonists. When using multiple diabetes medications, it is essential to monitor blood sugar levels closely to avoid episodes of hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia.

Humalog is like other insulins and can affect body weight. However, the impact of the body weight can depend on the person's metabolism, lifestyle and diabetes management.

  • Some people might experience weight gain while taking Humalog, often due to improved glucose absorption, reduced sugar loss through urine, and increased calorie retention.
  • In some cases, people may experience weight loss if their blood sugar levels were previously poorly controlled before starting Humalog.

To manage weight effectively while using Humalog, make sure to maintain a balanced diet, stay active, and monitor your insulin dosage carefully.

Humalog may be prescribed to pregnant or breastfeeding women with diabetes under medical supervision. Maintaining stable blood sugar levels is important during pregnancy to prevent complications for both mother and baby.

While breastfeeding, insulin does not pass into breast milk, making it safe to use. However, breastfeeding mothers may experience fluctuations in blood glucose levels, requiring careful monitoring and insulin adjustments.

Humalog is primarily prescribed for people with type 1 diabetes and for those with type 2 diabetes who require mealtime insulin. However, it may not be suitable for:

  • People with severe kidney or liver disease.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women (who should consult a healthcare professional before use).
  • Individuals with allergies to insulin lispro or any of its ingredients.
  • Those prone to frequent hypoglycaemia, as Humalog’s rapid action increases the risk of sudden blood sugar drops.
