FOAMLITE

Not all wounds need a thick, heavily absorbent dressing. Wounds producing minimal fluid, wounds in the later stages of healing, and skin areas requiring protection without a bulky cover all benefit from a thinner, lower-profile format that stays comfortably in place without adding unnecessary bulk. FoamLite is a thin self-adhesive foam dressing from ConvaTec for low to moderately exuding wounds. The reduced foam thickness keeps the dressing low-profile, and the self-adhesive border holds it in place without secondary fixation. FoamLite is a Class IIb regulated medical device from ConvaTec, part of the Essity group. It is a thin polyurethane foam wound dressing with a self-adhesive border. The dressing consists of a non-adherent wound contact surface, a thin absorbent foam core, a moisture vapour permeable breathable film, and an adhesive border that holds the dressing to the surrounding intact skin.

The "FoamLite" element of the brand name reflects the reduced foam thickness compared with standard foam dressings such as the standard foam dressings. This thinner construction gives the dressing a lower overall profile and reduces its total fluid capacity, which is appropriate for wounds producing low to moderate amounts of exudate. Using a thick, high-capacity foam on a wound producing minimal fluid risks drying the wound surface, as the foam draws more moisture than the wound is generating.

FoamLite is self-adhesive and self-contained. It does not require a secondary dressing or tape for fixation in most clinical situations. The breathable film outer layer allows moisture vapour to evaporate while remaining waterproof to external fluids, making it suitable for wearing during showering.

Four sizes cover a range of wound dimensions: 5.5cm x 12cm, 8cm x 8cm, 10cm x 10cm, and 15cm x 15cm. The 5.5cm x 12cm is a narrow rectangular format particularly suited to elongated wound sites on digits, linear wounds, and other sites where width is limited but length is the critical coverage dimension. No active pharmaceutical ingredients are present.

FoamLite is designed for low to moderately exuding wounds. It is not appropriate for heavily exuding wounds - the thin foam layer will saturate quickly. If exudate reaches the dressing border or the dressing needs changing more than once daily, the wound is producing more fluid than this dressing can manage and a more absorbent format should be considered. FoamLite has no antimicrobial action and should not be used on infected wounds.

Thin Foam Absorbent Layer

The foam core absorbs wound exudate from the wound contact surface below and holds it within the foam structure. In FoamLite, the foam is thinner than in standard foam dressings, giving it a proportionally lower fluid capacity that matches the low exudate output of wounds for which it is indicated. The foam retains fluid away from the wound bed, preventing pooling while maintaining the consistent wound surface moisture associated with moist wound healing.

Non Adherent Wound Contact Surface

The inner face of the dressing rests against the wound and does not bond to wound tissue. This allows the dressing to be lifted at removal without pulling on healing skin, protecting fragile new tissue from disruption at each change. Wound fluid passes through this layer into the foam above.

Breathable Film and Self Adhesive Border

The outer film is breathable, allowing moisture vapour to escape and maintaining the foam's capacity to absorb over the full wear period. The film is waterproof to external fluids. The self-adhesive border adheres to dry intact periwound skin and holds the dressing in place without secondary fixation. No secondary dressing is required.

Preparation

• Wash hands and use gloves.
• Clean the wound and dry the surrounding skin.
• The adhesive border requires dry intact skin to adhere.

Application

• Select the appropriate size: 5.5cm x 12cm, 8cm x 8cm, 10cm x 10cm, or 15cm x 15cm.
• Remove the release liner.
• Centre the foam pad over the wound.
• Press the adhesive border onto the surrounding skin.
• No secondary dressing is required.

Change Frequency and Removal

• Change when exudate approaches the border, the border lifts, or when clinically indicated.
• With low exudate, the dressing can remain in place for several days.
• Lift one corner of the border and peel slowly back to remove.
• If the border feels firmly adhered, dampen with water or saline before removing.
• Assess the wound at each change.

FoamLite is waterproof and can be worn during showering. Pat dry after washing and confirm the border is still adhering. If the border has lifted, replace with a fresh dressing.

FoamLite 5.5cm x 12cm

A narrow rectangular format suited to elongated wound sites where width is limited. This size is particularly useful for digit and finger wounds, linear wounds on limbs, and other sites where the wound runs longer than it is wide and a square dressing would extend significantly beyond the wound on two sides.

FoamLite 8cm x 8cm

A small square suited to compact wound areas where a 10cm x 10cm pad would provide more coverage than needed. Appropriate for smaller wounds on the hands, feet, and other sites where precise sizing reduces adhesive border area on intact skin.

FoamLite 10cm x 10cm

A medium square suited to moderate-sized wounds where thin foam coverage and a low-profile self-adhesive format are both clinically appropriate. A versatile size across a range of wound types and body locations.

FoamLite 15cm x 15cm

A larger square for more extensive wound areas producing low to moderate exudate, where the foam coverage needs to be broader but the thin profile remains the appropriate choice.

In all sizes, ensure the foam pad fully covers the wound and the adhesive border rests on intact surrounding skin.

Do Not Use FoamLite If

• The wound is producing heavy exudate - the thin foam will saturate rapidly.
• The wound is infected - no antimicrobial action.
• Known sensitivity to the adhesive or foam components.
• The wound is dry - a thin foam dressing may cause further desiccation.

Precautions

• Single use only.
• Monitor exudate level. Step up to a more absorbent dressing if exudate increases.
• Assess periwound skin at each change.
• Remove before MRI.

Adverse Effects

• Skin irritation at the adhesive border, particularly on fragile or previously damaged periwound skin.
• Wound desiccation if the wound transitions to very low or no exudate without a dressing review.

Wounds and Patients Where FoamLite Is Appropriate

• Low to moderately exuding clean wounds including wounds in the later healing phase, superficial abrasions, minor post-operative wounds, and skin areas requiring gentle wound coverage without bulk
• Wound sites where dressing thickness matters: beneath footwear, inside compression hosiery, under close-fitting clothing, or over bony prominences where bulk causes discomfort
• Adults and children where clinically directed

FoamLite Within the ConvaTec Wound Care Range

ConvaTec produces foam dressings at different absorbency levels for different wound exudate volumes. FoamLite is the thin, low-capacity option for low exudate wounds. Other ConvaTec foam formats offer greater absorbency for moderate to heavy exudate. Matching the dressing absorbency to wound output avoids both saturation from under-specification and desiccation from over-specification.
