What is Fluconazole?

Belonging to a category of drugs known as azole antifungals, Fluconazole is an antifungal medication that is generally used for treating vaginal yeast infections or thrush. The thrush relief medicine works as an effective agent for stopping the progression of common vaginal yeast. It can also be used by male partners who have thrush on their penis.

It is used to treat or prevent candidiasis as well as meningitis, which is infection of the spinal cord or brain.

How Does Fluconazole Work?

A yeast named Candida albicans is the underlying cause of thrush. It is usually present in many women without causing any discomfort or harm but on some occasions, the yeast production gets disturbed resulting in a vaginal infection.

Candida yeast lives in different parts of your body including mouth and genitals without causing any harm. However, when the environmental acidity is changed, Candida levels may increase. This can happen due to a certain medication, hormonal changes, or a weak immune system. The symptoms include soreness, swelling, itching or burning of the vulva, vagina or areas surrounding the genitals.

Fluconazole acts rapidly to counter the excessive production of Candida relieving the symptoms in a few days. It can also be used pre-emptively to prevent vaginal infections.

What Are the Benefits of Taking Fluconazole?

There are many benefits of using Fluconazole including:

  • Treats and prevents genital thrush for both men and women
  • Stops growth of vaginal yeast or fungus
  • Relieves symptoms like burning, itching, and soreness

How Do I Use Fluconazole?

Fluconazole is available in both suspension and tablet varieties, which you can take by mouth. It can also be consumed in injectable form but only a healthcare provider can give it to you.

You should only use Fluconazole according to your physician's prescription and only consume a dose that is prescribed for your condition. The capsule is supposed to be swallowed with water. For adults who are above 16 years of age, one capsule of 150 mg is generally recommended while for underage children as well as senior citizens who have cross the 60-year mark, Fluconazole is not recommended. The medicine starts working within two days or even earlier in some women.

You can take it with or without food as it does not have any impact on the effectiveness of the medicine. If you are unsure about your dosage, contact your doctor immediately. And if the condition of your yeast infection does not witness any improvement or worsens further, seek medical assistance without waiting any longer.
