First Aid Kit 10 People

Being prepared for a minor accident or medical incident at work requires having the right supplies to hand before anything happens. First Aid Kit (10 People) is a compact first aid kit containing the essential items needed to manage minor injuries and medical incidents for a workplace of up to ten people. First Aid Kit (10 People) is a pre-assembled first aid kit containing the supplies recommended by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for small workplace first aid provision. The HSE requires all workplaces to have adequate first aid provision, and for small low-risk workplaces, a stocked first aid kit is the minimum required provision alongside a designated appointed person responsible for first aid.

The kit contains nine categories of item covering the most common minor injury and first aid needs: wound cleaning, wound covering, bleeding and wound management, eye injury, immobilisation, infection control, and reference guidance. Each item serves a distinct purpose in the immediate management of a minor incident before medical services arrive or the person can be safely moved to further care.

The kit is described as suitable for small offices, shops, and libraries. These are environments with relatively low physical risk where the most common incidents are minor cuts, grazes, bruising, and small burns rather than major injuries. The contents are proportionate to this risk profile. A workplace with higher physical risk, construction, manufacturing, or outdoor work, will typically require a more extensively stocked first aid box.

A first aid kit is a supply resource, not a substitute for first aid training. The HSE recommends that workplaces with first aid kits also have at least one appointed person who has completed appropriate first aid training. Plasters

Sterile adhesive plasters are for covering small cuts, grazes, and minor skin breaks after the wound has been cleaned. They protect the wound from contamination, provide light compression to support healing, and keep the wound moist as it closes. Plasters should be changed daily or when they become wet or dirty.

Saline Cleansing Wipes

Saline wipes are for cleaning minor wounds before covering them. Sterile saline removes surface dirt and debris without the irritation that stronger antiseptic agents can cause on broken skin. They are particularly useful in a workplace setting where running water may not always be immediately accessible.

Medium and Large Sterile Dressings

Sterile wound dressings are for covering and applying pressure to larger wounds than plasters can accommodate. The medium and large sizes allow the correct dressing to be matched to the wound size. These dressings have an absorbent pad and a bandage for securing them in place. They are suitable for managing bleeding from cuts and lacerations while awaiting further care.

Eye Pad Sterile Dressing with Conforming Bandage

An eye pad dressing is for covering an eye that has been injured or that has a foreign body in it. The pad protects the eye from further contamination and light pressure while the person is taken for medical assessment. It is not for removing foreign bodies from the eye; this requires clinical management.

Triangular Bandages

Triangular bandages serve multiple purposes in first aid: as a sling to immobilise an arm following a suspected fracture or dislocation, as a broad bandage to hold a dressing in place, or folded as a pad. They are a versatile and essential component of a first aid kit.

Nitrile Disposable Gloves

Nitrile gloves are for the person providing first aid to wear when managing wounds, applying dressings, or dealing with bodily fluids. They protect both the casualty and the first aider from cross-contamination. Nitrile is suitable for people with latex sensitivity.

Safety Pins

Safety pins are for securing triangular bandages or slings once they have been applied. They close the bandage end securely without sharp points presenting a secondary risk.

Guidance Leaflet

The guidance leaflet provides reference information on how to use the items in the kit and on basic first aid procedures. It is a practical reference for appointed persons and staff who may need to provide first aid without formal training.

Before Using the Kit

• Put on nitrile gloves before handling any wound or injury.
• Assess the severity of the incident before opening the kit.
• Call 999 immediately if the incident involves major injury, chest pain, breathing difficulty, loss of consciousness, or any situation that requires emergency medical care.
• Minor incidents only, cuts, grazes, small burns, minor sprains, are appropriate for first aid kit management.

Using the Items

• For cuts and grazes: clean with a saline wipe, allow to dry, cover with an appropriately sized plaster or sterile dressing.
• For larger or bleeding wounds: apply the medium or large sterile dressing firmly and hold until bleeding slows.
• For eye injuries: cover the eye with the eye pad and seek medical assessment promptly. Do not attempt to remove foreign objects.
• For suspected arm fractures: apply a triangular bandage as a sling and seek medical assessment.
• Secure bandages with safety pins where needed.
• Refer to the guidance leaflet for additional procedural guidance.

After Use

• Dispose of used items as clinical waste.
• Restock the kit promptly after any item is used - do not leave gaps in the kit contents.
• Check item expiry dates regularly as part of routine kit maintenance.

First aid kit items that have been used, opened, or whose packaging has been compromised should be replaced before the kit is relied upon again. A half-stocked kit in an emergency is worse than a full kit because it creates false confidence. Assign a named person to check and restock the kit regularly.

General First Aid Precautions

• Always call 999 for emergencies. A first aid kit is for minor incidents only.
• Wear gloves before providing first aid involving contact with blood or open wounds.
• Do not remove deeply embedded objects from wounds - cover and seek medical help.
• Do not give food or drink to someone who may need surgery or who has a head injury.
• Do not move a person with a suspected spinal injury unless they are in immediate danger.

• Replace used or expired items promptly.
• Keep the kit in a clearly marked, accessible location known to all staff.
• Do not lock the first aid kit - it must be instantly accessible in an emergency.
