Elocon is an anti-inflammatory, which belongs to the group of medicines called corticosteroids (or steroids), for administration to the skin. Elocon is indicated for the relief of manifestations such as inflammation and itching, caused by certain inflammatory skin disorders, such as psoriasis (except for extensive plaque psoriasis), atopic dermatitis, irritant dermatitis and/or contact allergies.
Elocon is a skin rash and itch treatment medication, it is a medium potency synthetic corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive properties. It is used topically to alleviate the pruritic and inflammatory manifestations of some dermatoses that respond to corticosteroids. Intranasally, it is used to relieve the symptoms of allergic rhinitis. Elocon is available as a cream and as an ointment.
Elocon contains the main active ingredient, Mometasone, like other corticosteroids, has anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive properties. In allergies, corticosteroids reduce the allergic responses of various cell types (mast cells and eosinophils) involved in allergic responses. At the molecular level, circulating corticosteroids in the blood easily cross cell membranes and bind with high affinity to specific cytoplasmic receptors. The end result is transcription and protein synthesis.
Mometasone inhibits the action of the cytochrome P450 2C8 enzyme that participates in monooxygenase activity.
Inflammation is reduced by decreasing the release of acidic hydrolases from leukocytes, preventing macrophage accumulation at sites of inflammation, interference with leukocyte adhesion to the capillary wall, reduced permeability of the capillary membrane, and consequent edema, reduction of complement components, inhibition of histamine and kinin release, and interference with the formation of scar tissue.
Elocon contains mometasone furoate, which belongs to a class of medications called corticosteroids.
Corticosteroids are hormones that carry out many activities, with an important role in controlling inflammation.
The multiple Elocon uses include being utilised to treat the following symptoms:
- Psoriasis, characterized by red spots, thickening, silvery-white peeling, and sometimes itching;
- Atopic dermatitis, characterized by itching, redness, peeling, and skin relief;
- Contact dermatitis, characterized by redness, peeling, small blisters, blisters, small superficial wounds, and scabs that occur when in contact with certain substances;
- Seborrheic dermatitis, a rash that affects areas rich in sebaceous glands such as the scalp, face, chest, and ears;
- Irritating dermatitis, characterized by blisters, peeling, crusting, itching, and thickening of the skin;
- Neurodermatitis, characterized by itching and peeling;
- Stasis eczema, characterized by darker areas, with thin red spots, sometimes thickened, with the presence of itching and pain;
- Dyshidrosis, characterized by small, often itchy blisters containing a clear liquid;
- Solar erythema, characterized by itching, pain, burning sensation, and the presence of bubbles.
