Duotrav/Travoprost+Timolol
DuoTrav is a clear solution eye drop. DuoTrav contains two active ingredients: travoprost (40 micrograms/ml) and timolol (5 mg/ml). It is used in patients with open-angle glaucoma (a disease that causes the pressure inside the eye to rise due to the inability to drain fluid) and in patients with ocular hypertension (i.e., the pressure inside the eye above normal). The medicine can only be obtained with a prescription.

About Duotrav
DuoTrav is used to reduce intraocular pressure (the pressure inside the eye, short for IOP-IntraOcular Pressure). DuoTrav is used to reduce intraocular pressure (the pressure inside the eye, short for IOP-IntraOcular Pressure). It is used in patients with open-angle glaucoma (a disease that causes the pressure inside the eye to rise due to the inability to drain fluid) and in patients with ocular hypertension (i.e., the pressure inside the eye above normal). DuoTrav contains a combination of medications, a beta-blocker (timolol), and a prostaglandin analog (travoprost), and is used in patients who do not respond sufficiently to eye drops that contain only beta-blockers or only prostaglandin analogs.
Duotrav eye drop solution contains two active substances: Travoprost and Timolol Maleate. These two components lower the intraocular pressure through complementary mechanisms of action and the effect combined produces an additional reduction in IOP compared to each of the components separately.
Travoprost, an analogue of prostaglandin F2a, is a very complete agonist. selective having a high affinity for the PF receptor of prostaglandins and reduces intraocular pressure by increasing drainage of aqueous humor through the trabecular meshwork and uveoscleral route. The reduction of IOP in humans starts within approximately 2 hours after administration and the maximum effect is reached after 12 hours. You can keep a significant reduction in intraocular pressure with a single dose during periods longer than 24 hours.
Timolol is a non-selective adrenergic blocking agent that lacks intrinsic sympathomimetic activity, the direct depressant activity of the myocardium, or membrane-stabilizing activity. Human studies with tomography and fluorophotometry suggest that its predominant action is related to reduced aqueous humor formation and a slightly increased outflow.
DuoTrav is used to reduce intraocular pressure. It is used in adult patients who have "open-angle glaucoma" or "ocular hypertension" who do not respond sufficiently to eye drops containing beta-blockers or prostaglandin analogues (other drugs used for these conditions).
Intraocular pressure means that the pressure inside the eye is higher than normal. In open-angle glaucoma, the pressure increases because the eye does not drain enough fluid.
The recommended dose is one drop in the affected eye (s) or eye (s), once-daily - morning or evening. Use it at the same time each day. DuoTrav should only be applied to both eyes if your doctor has recommended it.
- Immediately before using a bottle for the first time, open the wrapping bag, remove the bottle, and write the opening date in the space provided on the
- Stand before a mirror
- Wash your hands
- Unscrew the cap on the bottle
- Hold the bottle upside down between your fingers
- Tilt your head back. Gently separate the lower eyelid from the eye with a finger, until a bag forms, into which the drop should fall
- Bring the dropper tip close to the eye. The mirror may be helpful
- Do not touch the eye, eyelid, proximal areas, or other surfaces with the dropper, as the drops could become infected
- Gently squeeze the bottle so that one drop of DuoTrav falls each time. If a drop falls out of the eye, try again
- After using DuoTrav, press the edge of the eye, next to the nose, for 2 minutes. This helps prevent DuoTrav from passing to the rest of the body
- If DuoTrav is to be applied to both eyes, repeat the above steps on the other eye
- Close the bottle tightly immediately after using the product
- Use only one bottle at a time. Do not open the bag until you need to use the bottle
Use in adults, including elderly patients
The dose is one drop of DuoTrav into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye (s) once daily in the morning or evening. It must be administered every day at the same time.
If a dose is missed
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
In general, unless the effects are severe, you can continue to use the eye drops. If these effects concern you, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Do not stop applying DuoTrav without consulting your doctor.
