Maxalt/Rizatriptan

Rizatriptan is a headache medicine that narrows the blood vessels around the brain. Rizatriptan also reduces substances in the body that cause headaches, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and other symptoms of migraine. Rizatriptan is used for the treatment of migraines. Rizatriptan will only cure a headache that has already started. It does not prevent headaches or reduce the number of attacks. Rizatriptan tablets contain the active ingredient Rizatriptan Benzoate 10mg, a serotonin agonist used to relieve symptoms of a migraine attack. They also contain colloidal anhydrous silica, crospovidone, mannitol, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, guar gum, aspartame, and mint flavor.

About Maxalt/Rizatriptan Tablets

The generic (unbranded name for Maxalt wafers) tablets are prescribed to treat the headache stage which comes with migraines. A 5HT agonist, and containing rizatriptan, this medication helps reduce swelling in blood vessels, by working on the serotonin receptors in the brain.

It is still not known what brings on migraine, though it could be that an increase of activity in chemicals in the brain gives confused messages and many attacks occur for no reason, though some think they could be brought on by certain foods and drinks.

Around one third of people who experience migraines also experience an aura (neurological sensations) before the headache begins.

They may also experience vertigo, dizziness, pins and needles, as well as visual difficulties, such as seeing patterns, blind spots and tunnel vision. If the aura is not followed by a migraine headache, this condition is known as a silent migraine.

People also ask

What is Rizatriptan?

Rizatriptan belongs to the group of medicines called selective serotonin 5-HTIB / ID receptor agonists. Rizatriptan is used to treat migraine attacks, with or without aura. Rizatriptan is used to treat headaches from migraine attacks in adults. It reduces the swelling of the blood vessels that surround the brain. This swelling causes the headache of a migraine attack.

How does it work?

These 10 mg tablets contain rizatriptan, which is a member of the group of medicines called triptans and is a serotonin agonist that mimics the action of serotonin (also known as 5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT). Serotonin is a brain chemical that is involved in mood control, pain sensation, sexual behavior, sleep, as well as dilation (widening) and constriction (narrowing) of blood vessels. Migraine is believed to be caused by dilation or widening of the blood vessels in the head (intracranial vessels) due to one of the many triggers for migraine, which in turn stimulates the nearby trigeminal sensory nerves, which release chemicals, causing pain and inflammation.

The rizatriptan stimulates the serotonin receptors in these expanded blood vessels by causing them to narrow again (vasoconstriction) and inhibits trigeminal nerve activity and pain transmission, relieving pain. Both actions are believed to contribute to the anti-migraine action of rizatriptan and relieve headache and other symptoms of a migraine attack. These 10mg tablets are effective in relieving migraine pain within 30 minutes of taking orodispersible tablets.

What are the benefits of taking it?

Rizatriptan uses include being utilised to alleviate acute migraine attacks with or without aura, which is the perception of visual disturbances and/or odors, and is generally the first sign that a migraine is on the way. Rizatriptan should only be used to treat a migraine attack to relieve headache and other symptoms, including nausea and sensitivity to light and noise, but should not be used to prevent them from occurring migraine headaches.

You can use the tablets at any stage of a migraine attack, but it is most effective if taken as soon as possible after the first signs of headache and/or aura. The 10mg tablets are not intended to treat other types of headaches, such as cluster headache, which is a very painful type of headache that occurs in regular cycles or groups, interspersed with periods of remission. Rizatriptan is not intended for the treatment of hemiplegic migraine, which can also cause temporary weakness of one side of the body and paralysis; or basilar migraine, which is another form of migraine and is caused by an arterial spasm at the base of the brain that restricts blood flow to the brain.

How do I use it and its dosage?

Rizatriptan is used to treat migraine attacks. Take Rizatriptan as soon as possible after your migraine headache has started. Do not use it to prevent a crisis.

Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. If in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist again.

The recommended rizatriptan dosage is 10 mg.

If you are currently taking propranolol or have kidney or liver problems, you should use the 5 mg dose of rizatriptan. You should wait at least 2 hours between taking propranolol and taking rizatriptan up to a maximum of 2 doses in a 24-hour period.

How to administer Rizatriptan

Rizatriptan is an orodispersible tablet that dissolves in the mouth.

The orodispersible tablet can be used in situations where liquids are not available, or to prevent nausea and vomiting that may accompany the ingestion of tablets with liquids.

Do not handle the tablets with wet hands as the orodispersible tablets may break.

  1. Hold the blister strip by the edges and separate one blister from the rest of the strip along the perforations.
  2. Gently separate the back.
  3. Gently push the tablet out.
  4. Put the tablet on your tongue. It will dissolve directly in the mouth, so it can be easily swallowed.
