What is Sotalol?
Sotalol is a medicine that contains an active ingredient called sotalol that belongs to a group of medicines called beta-adrenergic blocking agents or beta-blockers.

The d- and l- isomers of sotalol HCL have similar Class III antiarrhythmic effects while the l- isomer is virtually responsible for all Blocking activity. Although significant Blocking effects may appear at oral doses as low as 25 mg, Class III effects are generally seen at daily doses above 160 mg.
Its blocking activity of Adrenergic receptors produces a reduction in heart rate (negative chronotropic effect) and a limited reduction in contractility (negative inotropic effect). These cardiac modifications reduce myocardial oxygen consumption and cardiac work. As with other Blockers, sotalol inhibits renin release. This suppressive effect of renin is significant, both at rest and during exercise. Like other Adrenergic blockers, Sotalol produces a gradual but significant reduction in blood pressure, systolic and diastolic, in hypertensive patients. With a single daily dose, blood pressure control is maintained for twenty-four hours in both the supine and standing positions.

How do I use it and its dosage?

Special warnings and precautions
Abrupt withdrawal:
Never stop treatment abruptly in patients with angina pectoris. Hypersensitivity to catecholamines has been observed in patients who discontinued treatment with blockers. Occasional cases of exacerbation of angina pectoris, severe arrhythmias, and in some cases, myocardial infarction have been reported after abrupt withdrawal of treatment. Patients should be monitored when chronic Sotapor treatment is withdrawn, especially those with ischemic heart disease.
The dose should be gradually reduced over a period of one to two weeks, and if necessary, start the replacement treatment at the same time. Sudden discontinuation can unmask latent coronary failure. Also, hypertension can develop.
