Ventolin is used to treat breathing problems caused by asthma, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), or other airway conditions. Such problems can manifest as chest tightness, shortness of breath, and wheezing. Ventolin relaxes the muscles of the airway walls to facilitate breathing. This medication can also be used to prevent some breathing difficulties, for example, those associated with allergies, or asthma attacks when exerting effort. Ventolin Inhalator sprays a dose of powder into the oral cavity. Shake it well before use, and inhale as you press down on the inhaler so that the powder reaches the lungs directly. After inhalation, hold your breath for at least 10 to avoid exhaling the medication. If you need a second administration, wait half a minute.

About Ventolin
Ventolin inhalers provide effective short-term relief from asthma and can prevent asthma symptoms from occurring after exercise. Ventolin is the most popular type of 'reliever' inhaler. The active ingredient is salbutamol, which will dilate the airways and ease breathing. This is a very reliable inhaler for emergency asthma attacks.
Two forms of Ventolin inhaler are available: the Accuhaler and the Evohaler. The Accuhaler is a plastic device which contains a 60-blister strip. Each of these contains a 200mcg dosage that combines microfine salbutamol and lactose. The Evohaler is a pressurised metal device – each inhalation contains 100mcg of salbutamol. The propellant used in the Evohaler is HFA-134a, which is much less harmful to the environment than older propellants. Each of these treatments will provide effective relief after one or two doses.
How often should I be using my inhaler?
It is said that because the Ventolin Evohaler is primarily used for relief on a when required basis, you should only be using one inhaler every month or two months depending on your condition. The usual dosage involves patients using one to two puffs of Ventolin up to a maximum of four times a day when it is required. However, if you are finding that you are needing your Ventolin Evohaler more and more, it may be best to go and visit your GP as your condition may not be as well controlled as you think.
Who can use a Ventolin Evohaler?
Ventolin can be used by a variety of individuals, from children to adults. However, our Pharmacy Planet prescribing body is only able to prescribe and issue medication to patients over the age of 18. Do Ventolin Inhalers contain steroids?
No, Ventolin inhalers do not contain steroids. They contain salbutamol -- sometimes called albuterol. Salbutamol is a sympathomimetic bronchodilator, meaning that it helps to relax the muscles in the airways, making it much easier to breathe.
How quickly does Ventolin start working?
The blue inhaler has become a prized possession amongst asthma sufferers of all ages because of how fast it is able to act on asthma symptoms. The Ventolin Evohaler is able to relieve symptoms within five minutes of administering the medication, making it a handy (as well as portable) tool for asthma related emergencies.
How do I know if my condition is not being well controlled by Ventolin?
Asthma, when not managed appropriately, can potentially be fatal. Speaking to your GP or Asthma Nurse can be beneficial as there may be treatments more beneficial to you. Not sure when to seek urgent care? If any of the mentioned points apply to you, seek medical attention as soon as possible:
• Your Ventolin inhaler is only relieving your symptoms for less than 4 hours.
• You are overusing your inhaler, and going over the recommended daily limits of 8 puffs a day.
• Even after using your inhaler, you are still struggling to breathe.
• Your chest is still tight or grows painfully tight after using your inhaler.
If your condition is not this serious, it may still be beneficial to book an asthma review if:
• You are waking up more than once in the middle of the night with asthmatic symptoms.
• Your airways are restricted to the point where it limits daily activity.
• You start to use your Salbutamol inhaler more frequently.
How do I use my Ventolin Evohaler during an asthma attack?
In the event of a sudden asthma attack, it is okay to go over the regular dosage of 8 puffs daily. You can inhale up to 10 puffs up salbutamol with 30 seconds between each puff. Prior to administering the dose, the inhaler should be shaken to prime it appropriately. When an asthma attack is more severe, you can administer this medicine through a nebuliser. This is an instrument that is able to deliver the medication in a mist form which is inhaler through a facemask. Unless prescribed this already, it will be given to you by a doctor. Asthma attacks have the ability to get worse within a very short period of time, urgent medical attention should be given if you or your child are:
• are having difficulty breathing and your asthmatic symptoms are not improving.
• Even after 10 puffs of salbutamol, your condition has not improved. You are able to take another dose of up to 10 puffs at least 10 minutes after your initial dose if absolutely necessary.

What is an 'Asthma Action Plan'?
Action plans for asthmatic patients can be extremely helpful, not just for those with asthma, but for those around you as well. An asthma action plan details what your asthma symptoms are and what to do if they are getting worse. It also lists what medicines you take daily to aid with symptoms and what emergency action to take when an asthma attack occurs. This is usually filled in with your healthcare provider and it is specific to you and is able to amended during asthma appointments to better suit your needs. Do you need a spacer for Ventolin?
A spacer is a cylindrical plastic tube where you can insert your inhaler's mouthpiece on one side and breath through the mask or mouthpiece on the other side. A spacer can be incredibly helpful in making sure that none of the medicine goes to waste, essentially helping you get the best possible use out of each puff. Spacers can only be used with metered dose inhalers (MDI), so if you have a dry powder or breath actuated inhaler, a spacer will not be necessary. Spacers are usually given to children to make sure that they are able to inhale the medicine correctly, but sometimes adults can be issued a spacer if they have deemed it necessary.
