The Risk Factors for Developing Asthma
Are you worried about getting asthma? Asthma can occur in children and adults and many times it is unclear why. It is not something you can catch from another person, but there are certain factors that might make you more susceptible to developing it.
What is Asthma?
Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that causes the airways in the lungs to become inflamed and swollen. The airways become narrow due to this inflammation and this causes respiratory symptoms that can make it difficult to breathe. Symptoms of asthma include coughing, shortness of breath, and wheezing.
Potential Causes of Asthma
- Family history: Compared to the rest of the population, you are up to six times more likely to develop asthma if you have a parent with asthma.
- Allergies: If you have any allergies, such as hay fever or eczema, you are more at risk of getting asthma.
- Mould: It is important to address any mould issues at home and in the workplace because frequent exposure to mould has been linked to asthma.
- Smoking: Smoking causes a multitude of effects on the body, particularly in the lungs. Smokers and those exposed to frequent second hand smoke are more likely to develop asthma.
- Respiratory illness: If you suffered from any respiratory problems as a baby or child, you may get asthma later in life.
- Occupational exposure: Working in an environment with industrial fumes, chemicals, and dust puts a person at higher risk of getting asthma.
- Air pollution: People in urban areas, especially ones with high levels of air pollution and smog, are more susceptible to getting asthma.
- Obesity: Not only are children and adults who are obese at a higher risk of getting asthma, but they tend to have more severe forms of it.
Asthma Treatment
There are no cures for asthma, but there are treatments available to help those with asthma live a happy, healthy life. The most common treatments are inhalers. Inhalers are devices that work by releasing medication in a spray that provides relief as soon as you breathe the spray in.
Ventolin and Salbutamol Inhalers: These are “reliever” inhalers used for short-term relief of sudden asthma symptoms.
Clenil Inhaler: A daily inhaler used to help prevent asthma symptoms rather than sudden acute ones.
