Is it a Headache or a Migraine?

Even though the terms are frequently used interchangeably, a migraine and a headache are two very distinct disorders. While both can cause pain in the head, headaches can vary in frequency and strength while migraines are a debilitating headache disorder.

What is a Headache?
There are many different types of headaches and nearly half of adults will experience one or more types of them in their lives.

  • Tension headaches: These present as pressure around the head and tenderness can spread to the scalp, shoulders, jaw, and neck. They are usually caused by stress and poor posture.
  • Sinus headaches: These can feel similar to migraines, but are caused by allergies, sinusitis, or congestion. They can usually be treated with antihistamines and decongestants.
  • Cluster headaches: Like the name suggests, these headaches come in clusters. Often lasting for weeks, they can occur several times each day and cause severe pain behind one eye. The eye also may dilate, droop, and swell.

Some medical conditions can cause headaches as well. Head trauma, sinus infections, brain tumours, sleeping disorders, and deformation of the upper body are all conditions linked to headaches. Caffeine, dehydration, alcohol, and overexertion may cause headaches, too.

What is a Migraine?
When asked what a migraine feels like, many people who suffer from them will tell you it’s the worst pain they’ve ever had in their lives. Migraines are different for everyone and the pain can be described as throbbing, aching, or pulsating. The pain is usually on one side of the head, around the forehead and eye.

Migraine symptoms can begin before any head pain begins and last anywhere from a few hours to a few days. These symptoms include:

  • Tiredness
  • Irritability
  • Neck stiffness
  • Dizziness or nausea
  • Sensitivity to light and smells
  • Difficulty speaking

Some migraines are accompanied by a visual disturbance known as an aura. They often begin before any head pain and it is even possible to have an aura without a headache.
