BIATAIN NON ADHESIVE FOAM

A reliable non adhesive foam dressing in a wide range of sizes provides the clinical flexibility to match the dressing to the wound rather than the wound to the dressing. Biatain Non-Adhesive is a polyurethane foam wound dressing from Coloplast in five sizes, from the compact 5cm x 7cm to the large 20cm x 20cm, including a rectangular 10cm x 20cm for elongated wound formats. It has no adhesive border and is secured with a secondary fixation product chosen to suit the wound location and patient. No silver, no ibuprofen, no antimicrobial agents. Suited to clean exuding wounds where standard foam exudate management is the clinical priority. No prescription is required.

Biatain Non-Adhesive is a regulated Class IIb medical device from Coloplast. It is the non-adhesive version of the Biatain foam range, the equivalent in format to Biatain Adhesive Foam but without any integrated border. The dressing consists of a non adherent wound contact surface and a hydrocellular foam absorbent core. There is no adhesive border, no film backing, and no active agents of any kind. It requires a secondary fixation product for every application.

The five-size range: 5cm x 7cm, 10cm x 10cm, 10cm x 20cm, 15cm x 15cm, and 20cm x 20cm, includes both square and rectangular formats. The rectangular 10cm x 20cm is particularly suited to elongated wound areas such as venous leg ulcers positioned along the lower leg, where a square dressing does not follow the wound shape as efficiently. The 20cm x 20cm is the largest size in the range, suited to extensive wound areas under clinical supervision.

Biatain Non-Adhesive contains no silver, no ibuprofen, and no antimicrobial agents. It is suitable for moderately to heavily exuding clean wounds where standard polyurethane foam exudate management is the clinical priority and infection management is not indicated. The absence of an adhesive border means the fixation method can be selected based on the wound location and patient factors — particularly relevant for patients with fragile or damaged periwound skin where adhesive borders cause trauma.

Biatain Non-Adhesive is the non-adhesive equivalent within the Biatain foam range. Where a self-adhesive format is preferred, Biatain Adhesive Foam provides the same foam construction with an integrated adhesive border in four sizes. Where local pain management is also needed, Biatain Ibu Non-Adhesive provides ibuprofen-containing foam without an adhesive border.

Biatain Non-Adhesive has no adhesive border and must be secured with a secondary fixation product at every application. It contains no antimicrobial agents. If the wound shows signs of infection, seek clinical assessment. Biatain Ag Non-Adhesive Foam provides ionic silver antimicrobial activity in a compact non-adhesive foam format for infected or at-risk wounds.

Non Adherent Wound Contact Surface

The wound contact surface is non-adherent to the wound bed. It allows wound exudate to pass through into the foam absorbent core above while minimising bonding to wound tissue. This non-adherent surface allows the dressing to be removed without significant trauma to the wound bed, protecting granulation tissue and new epithelium. For patients with fragile periwound skin who cannot tolerate adhesive borders, the non-adherent contact surface with secondary bandage fixation provides a clinically practical alternative.

Hydrocellular Foam Absorbent Core

The polyurethane foam core absorbs wound exudate drawn through the wound contact surface and retains it within the foam structure away from the wound. This prevents pooling of exudate at the wound bed, reduces maceration of the periwound skin, and maintains a moist wound healing environment at the wound contact surface. The foam retains absorbed exudate under light compression, which is clinically useful when the dressing is used under a compression bandage system for venous leg ulcer management.

Fixation Flexibility

The absence of an integrated border means the fixation method is determined entirely by the clinical situation. For venous leg ulcers, the compression bandage provides both compression therapy and dressing fixation simultaneously. For other wound locations, a tubular retention bandage, cohesive bandage, or wound retention sheet provides fixation. This flexibility is clinically useful across a wider range of wound locations and patient types than a fixed adhesive border format.

Before Application

• Wash hands and use appropriate gloves.
• Clean the wound with sterile saline or as directed by a healthcare professional.
• Dry the periwound skin gently.
• Select an appropriate secondary fixation product before applying the dressing.

Application

• Select the appropriate size: 5cm x 7cm, 10cm x 10cm, 10cm x 20cm, 15cm x 15cm, or 20cm x 20cm.
• Place the dressing over the wound with the non adherent wound contact surface facing the wound bed.
• Apply the secondary fixation product to hold the dressing securely in position.
• For venous leg ulcers, apply the compression bandage over the dressing — this provides both compression and fixation.
• Label with the date and time of application.

Wear Time and Removal

• Biatain Non-Adhesive can be worn for up to seven days depending on exudate levels.
• Change when exudate approaches the edge of the foam pad, fixation loosens, or clinical assessment indicates a change is needed.
• Remove fixation first, then lift the foam pad from the wound.
• Assess the wound at each change. Review the appropriateness of Biatain Non-Adhesive as the wound changes.

Biatain Non-Adhesive 5cm x 7cm

The smallest size, suitable for small and compact wounds including digit wounds, toe wounds, and localised wound sites where a small non adhesive foam pad is clinically appropriate and the compact rectangular shape provides better coverage than a square.

Biatain Non-Adhesive 10cm x 10cm

A versatile medium square size suitable for moderate-sized wounds including smaller pressure ulcers, venous leg ulcer areas, and post-operative wounds with moderate to heavy exudate. A commonly used general-purpose size across community and clinical wound care.

Biatain Non-Adhesive 10cm x 20cm

A rectangular size suited to elongated wound areas, lower limb wound sites, and wounds where a rectangular shape provides better coverage than a square. The 10cm x 20cm is particularly useful for venous leg ulcers on the lower leg where the wound follows an elongated course and a square dressing would leave wound areas uncovered or extend excessively in one direction.

Biatain Non-Adhesive 15cm x 15cm

A medium-large square size for more extensive wound areas including moderate to large pressure ulcers and larger venous leg ulcer areas where the 10cm x 10cm does not provide adequate wound bed coverage.

Biatain Non-Adhesive 20cm x 20cm

The largest size in the range, providing the broadest foam coverage for extensive wound areas including large pressure ulcers and significant chronic wounds. Suited to clinical settings and patients managing large wounds under clinical supervision. The 20cm x 20cm can be cut to fit with sterile scissors if the wound dimensions are smaller.

When selecting a size, ensure the foam pad covers the entire wound bed. The secondary fixation is then applied to hold the pad in place.

Do Not Use Biatain Non-Adhesive If

• The patient has a known allergy or sensitivity to polyurethane foam or any component of the dressing.
• The wound is infected or at risk. Biatain Non-Adhesive contains no antimicrobial agents.
• The wound is dry or minimally exuding.

Precautions

• Single use product. Do not reuse or reapply.
• Do not apply secondary fixation so tightly that it restricts blood flow, particularly in patients with peripheral vascular disease, diabetes, or oedema.
• Reassess at each change. If infection develops, switch to Biatain Ag Non-Adhesive Foam and seek clinical assessment.
• Do not use MRI scanning with the dressing in place.

Adverse Effects

• Wound desiccation if exudate falls significantly. Reassess dressing choice.
• Skin sensitivity or irritation. Discontinue if persistent.

Biatain Non-Adhesive Is Suitable For

• Moderately to heavily exuding clean wounds across a range of sizes and locations where non adhesive foam exudate management is clinically appropriate and secondary fixation is preferred or required
• Venous leg ulcers under compression bandaging where the bandage provides both compression and dressing fixation
• Patients with fragile or damaged periwound skin where adhesive borders would cause trauma at removal and secondary bandage or retention fixation is the preferred approach
• Wounds at body locations where secondary bandage fixation provides more secure coverage than an adhesive border
• Adults and children under healthcare professional supervision

Both are polyurethane foam dressings with no active agents from Coloplast. Biatain Adhesive Foam has an integrated adhesive border and is self-contained without secondary fixation. Biatain Non-Adhesive has no border and requires secondary fixation, but is available in five sizes including the rectangular 10cm x 20cm and the large 20cm x 20cm not available in the standard adhesive format. Choose Biatain Non-Adhesive when no adhesive is appropriate or when a specific size not available in Biatain Adhesive Foam is needed.
