People also ask

What is Colazide balsalazide?

Colazide Balsalazide is a drug for known its gastrointestinal Treatment capabilities, It does this releasing a substance, called mesalamine, which acts as an intestinal anti-inflammatory with local action on the internal lining (mucous membrane) of the large intestine (colon). Ulcerative colitis is a disease characterized by inflammation of the mucous membranes of the large intestine (colon) and rectum. Colazide Balsalazide works locally by reducing inflammation (treatment in the active phase). After symptoms disappear, Balzide can be used to prevent further flare-ups of symptoms (treatment in the maintenance phase)

How does it work?

Colazide Balsalazide reaches the colon intact, where it is cleaved by bacterial azo reduction to release equimolar amounts of mesalamine (5-aminosalicylic acid), which is the therapeutically active portion of the molecule, and the carrier residue 4-aminobenzoyl-β-alanine. This carried rest only minimally absorbs and is largely inert.

The mechanism of action of 5-ASA is unknown, but it appears that this action is local, in the mucosa of the colon. The production of the arachidonic acid metabolites by the mucosa of the colon, both through the cyclooxygenase pathway, that is, the prostanoids, and through the lipoxygenase pathways, that is, leukotrienes and hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acids, is found increased in patients with chronic inflammatory bowel disease. 5-ASA decreases inflammation by blocking the production of arachidonic acid metabolites in the colon.

What are the benefits of taking it?

Colazide Balsalazide capsules are used to treat ulcerative colitis (a disorder that causes inflammation and ulcers in the lining of the colon [large intestine] and rectum). Balsalazide is an anti-inflammatory medicine. In the body, it is converted to mesalamine and works by reducing intestinal inflammation, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, and stomach pain
