Azopt/Brinzolamide

AZOPT is indicated for reducing intraocular pressure (pressure inside the eye) in patients with ocular hypertension (increased pressure inside the eye) or open-angle glaucoma (a disease in which there is an increase in the pressure in the eye due to the fact that the ' aqueous humor can not drain out of the eye). It is used as adjunctive therapy to beta-blockers or prostaglandin analogues (other drugs used to treat these conditions) or as monotherapy (alone) in patients who cannot take beta-blockers or if these drugs have proven ineffective. The medicine can only be obtained with a prescription.

About Azopt

Azopt ophthalmic is used in the treatment of elevated pressure in the eye in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. The main active ingredient, brinzolamide is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. It is used as adjunctive therapy to beta-blockers or prostaglandin analogues (other drugs used to treat these conditions) or as monotherapy (alone) in patients who cannot take beta-blockers or if these drugs have proven ineffective. The medicine can only be obtained with a prescription.

People also ask

What is Azopt?

Azopt ophthalmic is used in the treatment of elevated pressure in the eye in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. The main active ingredient, brinzolamide is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. It works by reducing the production of fluids in the eye, thus helping to reduce intraocular pressure. Azopt is administered in the form of a solution for ophthalmic use, instilling in the eye as an eye drop.

How does it work?

It works by inhibiting carbonic anhydrase, which decreases the production of aqueous humor by ciliary processes. The disturbed balance between the production and reabsorption of aqueous humor is the main factor involved in ocular hypertension and glaucoma, a disease that can lead to permanent vision loss if left untreated.

After its administration in the form of eye drops, the fundamental action is local. Although it passes into the blood, its plasma concentration is very low and practically undetectable. Oral administration is theoretically feasible but is not used due to irregular absorption and a greater number of side effects.

Azopt (Brinzolamide) can be used as a single agent or in association with other drugs such as timolol, which also reduces ocular hypertension, but through a different mechanism of action.

What are the benefits of taking it?

Azopt is used to reduce intraocular pressure. It is indicated in patients with ocular hypertension (when the pressure in the eye is higher than normal) or open-angle glaucoma (a disease in which the eye pressure rises due to reduced drainage from the eye). Azopt is used as a complementary therapy to beta-blockers or prostaglandin analogues (other medicines used in these cases) or as monotherapy in patients who can take or have not responded to beta-blockers.

How do I use it?

Always use this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. If in doubt, consult your doctor or pharmacist again.

Only use AZOPT in your eye (s). Do not swallow or inject.

  1. Take the AZOPT bottle and stand in front of a mirror
  2. Wash your hands
  3. Shake the bottle and unscrew the cap. After removing the cap, the seal ring should be removed if it is loose before using this medicine.
  4. Hold the bottle upside down between your thumb and middle finger
  5. Tilt your head back. Gently separate the eyelid from the eye with a finger, until a bag forms, into which the drop should fall.
  6. Bring the tip of the bottle close to the eye. Can help with the mirror
  7. Do not touch the eye, eyelid, proximal areas or other surfaces with the dropper, as the drops could become contaminated
  8. Gently press the base of the bottle so that one drop of AZOPT falls each time.
  9. Do not squeeze the bottle: it is designed so that gentle pressure on the base is sufficient.
  10. After using AZOPT, press the edge of the eye, next to the nose with your finger for at least 1 minute. This helps prevent AZOPT from passing to the rest of the body.
  11. If drops are applied to both eyes, repeat all of the above steps with the other eye
  12. Screw the cap tightly on the bottle immediately after using the product.
  13. Finish the bottle you are using before opening the next one.

If a drop falls out of the eye, try again.

If you are using another eye drop, wait at least 5 minutes between applying AZOPT and the other drops. Ophthalmic ointments should be administered last.

Its dosage

The dosage of Azopt is one drop in the affected eye or eyes twice a day. Some patients may have a better response by administering one drop three times a day. It is necessary to shake the suspension before use.

The use of Azopt is not recommended in patients with liver disease, given the lack of information on the safety and efficacy of the medicine in this category of patients. It should also not be administered to patients with severe renal impairment. Adequate experience in the pediatric use of Azopt has not been collected.
