Safety Information and Precautions
Contraindications
- Do not use on patients with a known sensitivity or allergy to silver or to CMC hydrofiber.
- Do not use on dry or minimally exuding wounds. CMC hydrofiber requires wound exudate to activate the gel. On dry wounds the dressing will not gel and may adhere to the wound surface.
- Do not use in conjunction with oil-based topical products directly under the dressing as these impair silver ion release.
Precautions
- AQUACEL Ag is a single use product. Do not reuse or resterilise.
- Ensure all dressing material is removed at each change. Irrigate thoroughly. Retained dressing can act as a foreign body.
- Silver containing dressings may cause grey or blue grey discolouration of the wound bed and periwound skin due to silver deposition (argyria). This is expected, localised, and generally reversible. Inform patients in advance.
- Do not use MRI scanning with AQUACEL Ag in place. Remove before MRI procedures.
- Silver dressings are not a substitute for systemic antibiotic therapy where there is spreading cellulitis, systemic infection, or sepsis.
- Use with caution in patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Seek clinical advice.

Both use ionic silver for antimicrobial activity and both gel on contact with wound exudate. The difference is the fibre material. ALGISITE Ag uses calcium alginate fibres derived from seaweed. AQUACEL Ag uses synthetic sodium CMC fibres. The CMC fibres produce stronger vertical wicking, absorbing exudate upward into the dressing rather than laterally, which better protects periwound skin from maceration. The CMC gel is also more cohesive and holds together more reliably at removal than calcium alginate gel.

No. AQUACEL Ag is applied dry to the wound. The wound exudate activates both the gelling mechanism and the silver ion release. Pre-wetting the dressing before application is not required and would reduce its absorbent capacity. Simply place the dry dressing on the wound and secure with an appropriate secondary dressing. For cavity wounds, loosely fill the cavity with the dry dressing and ensure it can be fully retrieved at the next dressing change.
Irrigate the wound with sterile saline before and during removal to soften the gelled dressing. The cohesive CMC gel of AQUACEL Ag generally removes as a single piece rather than fragmenting, which simplifies removal compared with some alginate dressings. Gently lift the softened dressing from the wound. After removal, irrigate the wound thoroughly to clear any gel residue before assessing the wound. Do not mistake the CMC gel residue for slough or wound tissue.
Yes. AQUACEL Ag is suited to cavity wounds because the CMC fibres gel and conform to the shape of the cavity as they absorb exudate, providing better wound contact than a flat sheet dressing. When packing a cavity wound, loosely fill the cavity with the dry dressing. Do not pack tightly. Leave space for the gel to expand as it absorbs exudate. Ensure the dressing is positioned so it can be fully retrieved at each dressing change. The cohesive nature of the CMC gel also assists with full retrieval at removal.
Silver containing dressings including AQUACEL Ag can cause grey or blue grey discolouration of the wound bed and surrounding periwound skin. This is caused by silver deposition in the skin tissue, a condition called argyria. In the context of wound dressings it is localised to the wound and periwound area. It is generally cosmetically significant rather than clinically harmful and typically fades after silver dressing use is discontinued. It is good practice to inform patients of this before starting silver dressing treatment.
