People also ask

What is Alphagan?

Alphagan, whose main active ingredient is Brimonidine are eye drops designed to decrease pressure in the eyes of patients with glaucoma (high pressure inside the eyes, which can damage the nerves and cause loss of vision) and ocular hypertension (pressure inside the eyes). above the normal limit, but not so high as to cause loss of vision). Brimonidine belongs to a class of medications called alpha-adrenergic agonists. It works by decreasing the amount of fluid present inside the eyes.

How does it work?

These Antiglaucoma glaucoma eye drops, in this case, Alphagan, are used to decrease intraocular pressure. It can be used only when beta-blocker eye drops are contraindicated, or with other drops, when the medicine alone is not enough to decrease an increase in intraocular pressure in the treatment of open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. The active substance in Alphagan is brimonidine tartrate, which works by decreasing the pressure in the eyeball.

What are the benefits of taking it?

The main active ingredient found in the Alphagan eye drops is Brimonidine, which in itself is a type of medicine called an “alpha-agonist”, which does its job by stimulating alpha receptors found on blood vessels in the eye. It does this by unblocking the flow of the aqueous humour (which is the liquid that’s inside the eyeball and that regulates the pressure of the eyeball).

How do I use it?

To apply the eye drops, follow these steps:

  1. Wash your hands well with soap and water.
  2. Check the dropper tip to make sure it is not cracked or chipped.
  3. Avoid contact of the dropper tip with the eye or anything else; eye drops and droppers must be kept clean.
  4. While tilting your head back with your index finger, pull down on the lower lid of the eye to form a hole.
  5. With the other hand, hold the dropper (tip down) as close to the eye as you can, but without touching it.
  6. Rest the other fingers of that hand on your face.
  7. While looking up, gently squeeze the dropper so that a single drop falls into the gap formed by the lower eyelid. Remove the index finger from the lower eyelid.
  8. Close your eyes for 2 to 3 minutes and tilt your head down, as if looking at the floor. Try not to blink or pinch your eyelids.
  9. Place your finger on the tear and press gently.
  10. Use a disposable tissue to wipe off any excess liquid from your face.
  11. If you need to put more than one drop in the same eye, wait at least 5 minutes before putting in the second drop.
  12. Replace the cap on the dropper bottle and tighten it. Do not dry or rinse the dropper tip.
  13. Wash your hands to remove any excess medicine.

Its dosage

The recommended dose is one drop of Alphagan in the affected eye or eyes twice a day, with an interval between doses, approximately 12 hours.

No dosage adjustment is necessary for elderly patients. As with any eye drops, to reduce possible systemic absorption, pressing the sac is recommended. Tear in the medial canthus (lacrimal point occlusion) for one minute, immediately after application of each drop. When more than one medicine is used ophthalmic, instillations should be done with an interval of 5 to 15 minutes.
