What is Alendronic?

Alendronic acid is a type of non-hormonal medication treatment known as a bisphosphonate. Alendronate helps to reduce bone loss which occurs in Osteoporosis. The use of alendronic acid on a weekly basis is recommended for the treatment of osteoporosis. Weekly alendronic acid administration has been found to lower the risk of hip and spinal fractures. Alendronic acid is administered on a weekly basis (once a week).

How does it work?

The active ingredient in weekly alendronic acid, alendronate sodium trihydrate, is a bisphosphonate that suppresses osteoclastic bone resorption without affecting bone production directly. Preclinical investigations have revealed that alendronate preferentially targets active resorption sites. Osteoclastic activity is suppressed without compromising osteoclast production or binding. The bone created with alendronate therapy is of normal quality.

What are the benefits of taking it?

Alendronic Acid is a non-hormonal medicine known as a bisphosphonate. It helps to restore bone and prevents bone loss in women after menopause. Why can't I get this medicine on the NHS?

Many patients have reported that it has become difficult to obtain liquid version of their medicines when they are having difficulty taking more traditional dose forms.

Instead of prescriptions for manufactured solutions or suspensions, some patients are being advised to use a crushed tablet dissolved in water to achieve a liquid version of their medicine.
